Etiquette Guidelines

NSLS has created Communities of Practice (CoPs) as a place for our members to share ideas, network and gain information. Using the features of the CoPs signifies that you agree to follow our guidelines. Doing so provides a positive experience for all our users. We reserve the right to terminate your access to the CoPs if you are in violation of the guidelines.

Treat Others with Respect

Don't say anything online you wouldn't say face-to-face. Do not use NSLS CoPs to:

  • Threaten, harass, embarrass, defame, abuse or stalk other users or otherwise violate the legal rights of any individual, group, or organization.
  • Express violence, racism, hatred, profanity, or obscenity.
  • Spam others.
  • Post advertisements.
  • Post messages that contain or link to pornographic or sexually explicit content, racially or ethically objectionable content, content that directly or indirectly promotes the use of any illegal substance, content that violates laws or regulations intended to protect minors, or other content deemed to be offensive or inappropriate by NSLS.

Obey the Law

The law prohibits:

  • Behavior or content related to illegal activities, such as starting or forwarding chain letters, illegal contests or promotions, or any other illegal activity.
  • Uploading files or posting messages containing photos, music, software or other material protected by copyright laws or other applicable laws unless you own the rights or have received necessary consent.
  • Posting messages that contain a computer virus or other code or files that could damage, harm, or otherwise disrupt the operation of anyone else's computer or storage device, or violate the privacy or security of any individual, group, or organization.
  • Posting materials that would allow others to inappropriately access software or Web sites.
  • Posting messages that impersonate, use the name of (without specific permission in writing) or misrepresent any individual, group, or organization.
  • Posting messages that violate any applicable federal or state law or regulation, or perform any activity that could subject NSLS to liability for violation of any federal or state law or regulation.

Be Responsible

NSLS Online Communities is not designed to be the primary place for storing materials. Make backups of materials you post. NSLS is not responsible for loss of any materials posted on the site.

Use your own judgment when evaluating information provided from other users. Conduct research prior to making decisions based on information posted.

Be Smart: Privacy Protection

Do not give out personal identification information such as: social security number, credit card number, driver's license number, password, etc.

Protect your computer against viruses. NSLS recommends installing a virus protection program on your computer and keeping it current.

Personal messages should not be resent without permission of the sender.

By accessing the Communities of Practice, the user automatically agrees to hold NSLS harmless from any and all damages and claims by a third party or parties which arise from such use.
